COURSE DESCRIPTION

At this level, students are considered to be proficient speakers of Italian. They can handle a large variety of complex ideas and situations, express themselves spontaneously and fluently, talking about personal, professional, or academic topics.

The course is aimed at perfecting the essential communication skills (speaking, listening, reading, and writing with perfect command of the conditional and subjunctive) across a variety of different registers. Students will also expand their vocabulary to include topics beyond the everyday conversation.

Great emphasis is put on written and oral production. Students will analyze and practice different types of text and genres. Italian culture is also an integral part of the course. Through various studying materials, students will learn about many aspects of Italian grammar, art, history, politics, and modern society.

Among other things, students will learn:
To communicate using appropriate registers in different formal and informal situations
To recognized regional varieties of the language
To read contemporary Italian literature
To describe events and narrate stories with great precision
To express what might have happened in the past
To differentiate homographs
To use idiomatic expressions accurately in the right context
To use and understand neologisms
